Day 5 Watson Lake, YT to Tok, AK

Alaska. Great ride today, 644 miles. The last 200 miles of the Alaska highway into beaver creek, yt is horribly maintained and incredibly isolated. I'd hate to ride this stretch alone.

I believe the jv squad could have very easily been persuaded to head south to Hyder and the lower forty-eight this morning, instead of heading another 1100 miles north. They were out voted.

Hard to believe as big as Alaska is there are only two roads that enter the state and only one is paved on the Alaskan side. both roads run through Tok. Our border crossing had just two agents and we were the only vehicles during the 20 minutes we were stopped. This is the only paved road into the state^

At dinner tonight, we met 3 other GS riders, all on separate trips, from Pennsylvania, New Zealand, and Austin.

Non-motorcycle related, we may have seen more long distance touring bicyclists then mcs on the Alaska highway today, not sure how far they ride but its isolated, and some of them looked to be having second thoughts.

At the border crossing we were 3775 miles from San Antonio. On to Homer tomorrow.
